Job Description

Memorial Sloan Kettering's Health Information Management team is seeking aQuality Assurance Coordinator (Coding Internal Auditor) to monitor the quality control standards for all aspects of clinical coding by auditing and validating the ICD-10-CM codes.

You Will:

  • Maintain accurate, legible, organized reports; coordinate, schedule, and facilitate meetings with coders; provide updates to Manager and department, as necessary.

  • Participate in the development of departmental guidelines; ensure accurate and comprehensive data collection within established time frames; assist in improving audit forms/tools to analyze coding accuracy/consistency; prepare reports that identify trends, including inconsistencies in policies/procedures with recommendations for improvement; review/resolve issues from coders, administration/mangers and clinical staff.

  • Closely manage special projects assigned to the department by providing feedback to manager regarding deadlines and outcomes; obtain accurate data necessary to complete project by utilizing all available tools/resources, within established time frames; establish systems for the efficient use of the data.

  • Adhere to all applicable regulatory/departmental policies related to coding/billing; respond to requests for data analysis/reports by reviewing/summarizing data obtained from audits and presenting to appropriate coders/managers; review daily reports to ensure documentation issues are resolved; establish communication mechanisms with internal/external departments to resolve pending issues; revise/resubmit information, as needed.

  • Extensively review medical record to ensure completeness for coding accuracy and optimal reimbursement; follow-up with appropriate departments when deficiencies/errors in documentation are noted, in a timely and efficient manner; conduct quality assessment audits and report findings to evaluate general medical record compliance, making necessary corrections, as needed; assist HIM management staff with specific quality assurance projects, such as JCAHO surveys.

  • Assist in the training and education of new and existing coders by reviewing policies/procedures and providing feedback on coded visits; respond to coders’ inquiries, giving advice based on established guidelines; identify deficiencies and provide individual training sessions, as necessary, ensuring accuracy and compliance; provide recommendations for departmental/group education on specific topics and areas of concern.

You Have:

  • A Bachelor's Degree and/or RHIA/RHIT or Coding Credential

  • Previous auditing experience preferred

  • At least 4-7 years of coding experience, specifically in E&M and CPT

  • Extensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM coding, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology

  • Ability to handle complex work assignments and/or provide guidance to other less experienced staff
